Matobo Hills, bushman paintings,zimbabwe

After three memorable days in the Kruger National Park, it’s time to cross the border into Zimbabwe! Our first stop in Zimbabwe will be the iconic and historic area of Matobo Hills. Matobo Hills National Park is one of the unsung highlights of Zimbabwe. In addition to being home to the country’s largest rhino population, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning and other-worldly landscape of balancing rocks known as kopjes – giant boulders unfeasibly balancing on top of one another. When you see it, it’s easy to understand why Matobo is considered the spiritual home of Zimbabwe. Here is where we will spend the following two nights enjoying what the area has to offer.

Safari in Zimbabwe

Today will be spent on a full-day excursion in Matobo National Park. The park is home to some of southern Africa’s oldest Bushman paintings drawn inside the caves of the impressive granite kopjes, telling the stories of life in the area thousands of years ago. We will spend our morning being guided through and between these granite kopjes, learning the history of Zimbabwe’s spiritual heartland. After lunch, we will climb back into our open vehicle and head into the park, where we will have the incredible experience of tracking rhino on foot! An experience that will never be forgotten. We will return to camp in the evening.

Great Zimbabwe Ruins

Today we will begin our journey eastwards, toward the inimitable, wild Gonarezhou National Park. En route, we will have a one night stopover at the Great Zimbabwe Ruins. Great Zimbabwe is one of the nation’s most treasured sights. So much so that the country was named after it! These wonderfully preserved ruins of the Bantu people indicate the level of civilisation in the area far earlier than was once believed. Tonight we will enjoy a break from camping in the comfort of a lodge.

We will spend our first three nights at Chipinda Pools in Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park, before crossing over the Mozambican border for our final night in the park. On day seven, we will arrive at Chipinda Pools around mid-afternoon with plenty of time to set up camp and enjoy the view over the Runde River and the birds, hippos, and elephants that occupy it.

Big 5 safari, Zimbabwe

Gonarezhou is Zimbabwe’s rising star and one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas, raw and untouched, a place of space, ever-changing landscapes and a growing population of speciality wildlife species, as well as one of the largest concentrations of elephants in Africa. We will spend three nights and two full days in this wilderness, exploring the park in all its glory. Even when not on safari, we can enjoy the wildlife from the comfort of our unfenced camp as elephants come down to the river for a swim and a drink. We fall asleep to the sounds of the bush – hippos bellowing into the night, hyenas cackling and lions roaring. A truly mesmerising experience in a place like no other.

Safari in Zimbabwe

Heading on a half-day safari, we will cross into Mozambique’s side of the park where we will spend our final night in the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. Due to Mozambique’s many years of political unrest, the wildlife population throughout the country plummeted to almost nothing. For our night here, we will stay in a private concession of the park, which sets an example through many years of conservation efforts that have almost regenerated this area of the park to its original, wild state. We will arrive at our camp around lunch time with time to relax before one last game drive.
