Great Migration safari in Tanzania

Although Tanzania is most famous for the great migration of Wildebeest (Gnu) as they thunder across the Mara and Talek rivers, it is also home to an abundance of other wildlife.

Tanzania’s conservation areas, reserves and 17 National Parks make up 38% of the countries land, making it a wildlife haven for massive animal populations.

From the snow capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro to the grass plains of the Serengeti and the low lying, lush vegetation of the Ngorongoro crater, Tanzania is home to some 20% of Africa’s larger mammal species.

Footsteps Tours runs scheduled departures during the peak migration season, giving us the best possible chance to witness this incredible phenomenon.

Climate:

Tanzania has a tropical climate, but its diverse topography results in regional variations in temperatures. In the highlands, temperatures range between 10 and 20 °C (50 and 68 °F) during cold and hot seasons respectively. The rest of the country has temperatures rarely falling lower than 20 °C and soaring as high as 38 °C.

Seasons:

Tanzania has 2 major migration seasons each year.

January – February: Migration season, when the Wildebeest (Gnu) migrate across the Mara, Sand and Talek rivers, following the rains to greener vegetation

July  – September: Migration season, when the Wildebeest (Gnu) migrate across the Mara, Sand and Talek rivers, following the rains to greener vegetation
